Net Income and Earnings per Share
For the fiscal third quarter, Alibaba reported a net income of 10.7 billion renminbi ($1.5 billion), reflecting a decline from 46.8 billion renminbi in the same period last year. The earnings per American depositary share (ADS) stood at 5.65 renminbi, compared to 17.91 renminbi per ADS in the previous year. On an adjusted basis, Alibaba’s earnings per share were 18.97 renminbi, slightly lower than the 19.26 renminbi per share from the previous year. Analysts had predicted earnings of 19.12 renminbi per share.
While Alibaba’s adjusted earnings saw a slight dip, the company’s revenue demonstrated growth. Total revenue for the quarter reached 260.3 billion renminbi, exceeding the FactSet consensus view and marking an increase from 247.8 billion renminbi in the same quarter last year.
Alibaba highlighted notable growth in order volume and the number of transacting buyers; however, it mentioned that the average order value had declined. Specific segment results revealed that cloud revenue experienced a 3% increase year-over-year, while revenue from the Taobao and Tmall e-commerce platforms rose by 2%.
